Wood wick candles

Cotton wick candles are common, but have you tried a wood wick candle? A wood wick candle creates a wonderful soft crackling sound and a beautifully shaped flame. However, a wood wick requires a little extra care to light and keep it lit!

Here are some tips to help you out:

Lighting a wood wick

The soy wax of your candle feeds the flame. To light your candle, hold your unlit candle on an angle, and light from the base of the wood wick (not from the top like you would with a cotton wick) letting the flame travel up the wick and soak up the melting wax. Once the wick is lit set on a level surface and enjoy!

Pro tip: Remember it may take several attempts to get it lit, especially the first time lighting your candle. Be patient.

Preventing tunneling

The first burn very important to prevent your candle from tunneling (leaving a ring of wax around the outside of the candle jar). Allowing your candle to fully melt to the edges of the jar will allow it to release the most fragrance and burn evenly throughout the life of the candle.

Trimming

A wood wick will need to be trimmed slightly shorter than a cotton wick candle. If the wick is too long or there is too much residue on the wick it will not stay lit. Each time before relighting, clear the flakey loose carbon off of the top of the wick and make sure the wick is trimmed to about 1/8 inch.
